Treats You Can Make For Your Dogs

Inga's Cheesy Carrot Muffins

Mix in a large bowl:
1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 cup grated carrot
Mix in small bowl, then add to above:
2 large eggs
1 cup milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil
Cook at 350 degrees
12 minutes for minis
20-25 minutes for large muffins
All of the dogs that I have seen try these loved them. If you do make these, I suggest using paper muffin/cupcake cups instead of foil, in case a dog gets ahold of one still in the wrapper. You can try them yourself, and of course there's no sugar...

Spike's Squares

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup powdered dry milk
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. brown sugar or honey
6 tbs. meat or bacon drippings, cold right from refrigerator, not melted or soft!
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/2 cup Ice water
Preheat oven to 350°. Lightly oil a cookie sheet. Combine flour, dry milk, garlic powder and sugar. Cut in meat drippings until mixture resembles corn meal. Mix in egg. Add enough water so that mixture forms a ball. Using your fingers, pat out dough onto cookie sheet to 1/2" thick. Cut dough into squares appropriate for your dog size. Prick each cookie with fork. Bake 25-30 minutes. Remove from tray and cool on rack. Store in airtight container.

Dog World's Dog Biscuits

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup powdered milk
1/3 cup bacon grease *can substitute Beef fat or Chicken fat
1 egg -- lightly beaten
1 cup cold water
In a bowl, combine flour and milk powder. Drizzle with melted fat. Add egg and water; mix well. Gather dough into a ball. On floured surface, pat out dough. Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes. Gather up scraps of dough and repeat rolling and cutting. Bake on un-greased baking sheets in 350 degree oven for 50 - 60 minutes or until crispy. (you can store in the fridge) Yield: Makes about 36 - 2 1/2 inch biscuits.

Taz's Cheese 'N' Garlic Bites

1 cup wheat flour
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon garlic powder (not garlic salt!)
1 tablespoon soft butter or margarine
1/2 cup milk
Mix flour and cheese together. Add garlic powder and softened butter. Slowly add milk till you form a stiff dough. You may not need all of the milk. Knead on floured board for a few minutes.
Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into shapes and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes. Let cool in oven with the door slightly open till cold and firm. Refrigerate to keep fresh.

Taz's Peanut Butter Cookies

1 can chicken dog food
1 cup Crunchy Peanut Butter
1/2 cup Sour Cream
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup Flour
1 1/2 cups dry dog food, chopped (optional)
Mix all ingredients except dry dog food. When everything is mixed together well, spread on a cookie sheet.
Sprinkle with dry dog food.
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes at 300; let cool, break into pieces and enjoy.

Favorite Dog Biscuits

People can eat these too, but the sugarless, alt-free dough is bitter before baking to its toasty flavored hard-texture which rivals that of bones. Peanut butter is used for flavor, egg as a binder, cereal for texture, powdered milk for nutrition and garlic for flea prevention. No salt or cornmeal since cornmeal is difficult to digest. If your dog can't tolerate eggs, add additional water to make a dough that is just slightly sticky. 3 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups multi-grain oatmeal or old-fashioned oats
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1 1/4 cups water
1 large egg (or omit and use water - see note above)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
peanut butter to taste

Inga's Oatmeal Crunchies

Dry Oatmeal Peanut Butter
Mix oatmeal and peanut butter in a bowl until the oatmeal clumps into balls.
Roll the mixture into small balls and place on a cookie sheet.
Freeze overnight or until hard. The hard part is not eating them all in one sitting.

Cheese-Oatmeal Delights

4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup cheese, melted
1/3 cup vegetable oil
6 bouillon cubes dissolved in 1 1/2 cups water, or 1 can broth (low-sodium is good)
Preheat the oven to 300.
Mix dry ingredients, then add oil, broth and melted cheese.
Mix until dough hold together in a ball and roll out 1/2 inch thick.
Cut out with cookie cutter.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool completely on a rack

Diet Doggie Cookie

2 cups rye flour
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2/3 cup warm water
1/2 cup white flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
Mix well. I usually add about 1/4 tsp either vanilla or mint flavor. Roll out to 1/4" thick. Cut into shapes (I usually use about a 3-4" bone-shape cutter). Bake on lightly greased cookie sheet for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

Poofy Doggy Drops

1 cup dry milk powder
1/4 cup corn oil
1 egg
6 oz good quality pet food, canned
1/4 cup water
Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water. Mix all dry ingredients together. Add the rest of the ingredients . (Dough will be very stiff. Drop dough by level half-teaspoons onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a preheated 300F. oven 25 minutes. Leave in oven to dry and cool. Store in airtight container. Store in the refrigerator or in the freezer as these can go moldy if left at room temperature for very long.

Bad Breath Banishers

2/3 cup lowfat milk

Baby Food Soft Doggie Cookies

1/4 cup Wheat germ (cream of wheat can be substituted for wheat germ)
Combine ingredients in bowl and mix well. Roll into small balls and place on well-greased cookie sheet. Flatten slightly with a fork. Bake in preheated 350F. oven for 15 minutes until brown. Cool on wire racks and STORE IN REFRIGERATOR. Also freezes well. *Variation: substitute cream of wheat for wheat germ and then used tablespoon to make cookie sized drops on plate. Microwave for 4 minutes on Medium-High. Suggest keeping an eye on them in microwave and perhaps start out for only 3 1/2 minutes. They do come out soft. Also suggested using Beef/Vegetable Dinner Baby Dinner instead of Beef or Chicken. Tester's note: Definitely something to howl about! Cookies are soft and chewy (good for older pets who have lost a few teeth). And they can be whipped up in no time.
